Innan Town, located in the central coastal area of Wakayama Prefecture, has been supported by the abundant blessings from both the mountains and the sea. There are slight differences in weather between the coastal and mountainous regions. The coastal area enjoys a warm climate year-round due to the influence of the Kuroshio current, while the mountainous areas have a cooler climate and experience snowfall in the winter. Agriculture and fisheries that take advantage of these climatic conditions have been thriving in the area. Vegetables such as peas, mini tomatoes, and watermelon, as well as flowers like statice and senryo, have long supported the local community's way of life.

In addition, during the Edo period, local residents like Jintaro Kadoya, Yahei Mori, and Yoichi Innan, who were from Innan Town, invented the method for making "katsuobushi" (dried bonito flakes), and the town is also known as the birthplace of the high-quality "Shinmawasa" wasabi, which is now mainly produced in Shizuoka Prefecture.

In Innan Town, you can find frogs all around, such as on the "Frog Post" in front of the post office and the frog in the JR Innan station building. One of the most notable frog-themed landmarks is the "Frog Bridge," which symbolizes "effort, patience, and leap" and is inspired by the image of a "frog leaping to a willow" (by Ono Michikaze).
The bridge’s name is a play on five different meanings of "kaeru" (the Japanese word for frog): "to think" (かんがえる), "to change" (ひとをかえる), "to transform" (まちをかえる), "to return home" (ふるさとへかえる), and "to prosper" (さかえる).
If you visit Innan Town, be sure to encounter all the different kinds of frogs.

As a result, when the domain system was abolished and Kumano was incorporated into Mie Prefecture, a branch office was established, and even today, many government offices that oversee the Kumano region in Mie Prefecture are located here.

STAGE 4
Taiji Hanto Circuit Course

Taiji Town is located in the Higashimuro District of Wakayama Prefecture.

Historically, it has been known nationwide for its whaling industry and is said to be the birthplace of traditional Japanese whaling. The town, which was formed in 1889 (Meiji 22) by the merger of Taiji Village and Moriura Village, remains as it was at the time, making it the smallest town in Wakayama Prefecture in terms of area. Its entire area is surrounded by the sea and Nachikatsuura Town.

Taiji Town is situated on a peninsula that juts out into the Kumano-nada Sea, with a ria coastline formed by Moriura Bay and Taiji Bay. It is blessed with two good harbors: Moriura and Taiji. At the back of Taiji Bay lies the main settlement of Taiji, a fishing port town that has developed into a large community. In contrast, the settlement at the back of Moriura Bay, Moriura, is much smaller. The town is located in the southwestern part of the Kii Peninsula, and the climate is mild. Additionally, to the north of the town, in the southern part of Nachikatsuura Town near JR Yukawa Station, there is an outlying area known as Natsuyama (夏山), which is part of Taiji’s larger district.

Nachikatsuura Town is located in the Higashimuro District of Wakayama Prefecture. It is part of the Kumano area of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" and is one of the top tourist destinations on the Kii Peninsula, attracting many visitors.

The eastern side of Nachikatsuura Town is bordered by the sea, and its coastline is composed of a typical ria coastline, with many intricate inlets. The climate is mild due to the influence of the Kuroshio current, which has created several natural good harbors within the town. Particularly, the port of Katsuura is located in a bay surrounded by the Narushima Peninsula, with an island called Nakano-shima at the entrance. This natural formation shields the harbor from rough seas, making it one of the best harbors in southern Kii. Additionally, hot springs are found in the area around Katsuura Port.
